Case Study: Designing the Social Chat App Experience for BitChat
Introduction
BitChat is a social chat application that transforms everyday conversations into a rewarding experience by allowing users to earn cryptocurrency while chatting with friends. Unlike traditional chat apps, BitChat introduces ChatCoin, a unique feature where users accumulate rewards by maintaining chat streaks (akin to the 'achievement' and 'gamification' appeal of SnapChat), which can later be cashed out. The interface is fun, fresh, and vibrant, designed to seamlessly combine social interaction with an intuitive way to track both conversations and earnings.
With its engaging design and innovative concept, BitChat makes staying connected with friends both enjoyable and profitable.
1. The Challenge
Creating a social chat app that stands out in a crowded market required tackling several key challenges:
• Noise-Free Simplicity: How to design an interface that remains clean and minimal while supporting advanced features like crypto tracking and rewards.
• Integrating Gamification: Balancing gamified elements such as streaks and achievements without detracting from the primary focus on conversations.
• Encouraging User Retention: Developing features that keep users engaged without overwhelming them with information or notifications.
• Crypto Accessibility: Making cryptocurrency earning, tracking, and cashing out intuitive and non-intimidating for first-time users.
Key considerations:
• How to visualise ChatCoin earnings without cluttering the interface.
• Maintaining a conversational focus while subtly incorporating gamified elements.
• Ensuring the app appeals to both casual and Web3-savvy users.
2. The Process
To address these challenges, we followed a comprehensive design process:
a. Research and Discovery:
• Conducted user interviews to understand pain points in existing chat apps and user expectations from crypto-based features.
• Performed competitor analysis, focusing on apps like WhatsApp, Messenger, and crypto-wallet platforms.
• Collaborated with stakeholders to define the core brand values and user priorities.
b. Ideation and Wireframing:
• Created wireframes that emphasised minimalism and ease of navigation.
• Explored visual layouts that combined chat and wallet functionalities without overwhelming the user.
• Developed mood boards to establish a cohesive visual style.
c. Prototyping and Testing:
• Built interactive prototypes to test the integration of chat and gamified features such as streak tracking and ChatCoin wallets.
• Conducted usability testing to gather feedback on the flow and accessibility of features.
d. Refinement:
• Iterated on the design based on feedback, fine-tuning the balance between social interaction and cryptocurrency management.
3. Execution
As the designer, my responsibilities included:
a. Visual and Interaction Design:
• Crafted a minimal yet vibrant interface, with clean lines and intuitive layouts.
• Designed wallet screens that clearly displayed earnings, transactions, and cash-out options.
• Incorporated gamified elements like streak counters and achievement notifications in a non-intrusive way.
b. User Experience (UX) Design:
• Simplified navigation paths to ensure users could easily switch between chat and wallet functionalities.
• Ensured the onboarding process explained crypto-related features clearly and concisely.
• Focused on accessibility, making the app usable for both experienced crypto users and novices.
c. Collaboration:
• Worked closely with developers to implement seamless interactions, such as real-time streak updates and transaction feedback.
• Partnered with the marketing team to ensure the app’s design aligned with promotional strategies.
d. Testing and Optimisation:
• Conducted A/B testing to refine the placement of key features like cash-out buttons and notifications.
